What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is an incurable cancer that can attack the lining of the lungs, heart, abdomen, or testicles. It is most-commonly found in the lining of the lungs; most likely because it caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers. Asbestos is a heat-resistant and durable compound that occurs naturally and has been used for centuries in a variety of commercial industries.

Asbestos was most commonly used in commercial shipping industries, automobile applications, roofing, insulation, and heating industries. For decades, Americans were exposed to asbestos while working in these industries without the realization that asbestos could be harmful in anyway.

Eventually, it was determined that asbestos could cause horrible health issues for those that regularly inhale it. These health issues could include asbestosis and mesothelioma.

What is Pleural Mesothelioma?

Seventy-five percent of all mesothelioma cases are pleural mesothelioma where the cancer attacks the lining of the lungs (pleura). Pleural mesothelioma has the following symptoms:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Dry cough that won't go away
  • Unending chest pain
  • Night sweats
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty swallowing

Pleural mesothelioma treatment usually includes a combination of radiation and chemotherapy, along with treatments for the individual symptoms. Because it manifests symptoms of so many other conditions, it is very common for the disease to be misdiagnosed as something else.

There are also surgical options that can be performed if pleural mesothelioma is found in an early-enough stage, which is why there are so many clinical trials trying to determine how to diagnose mesothelioma quicker.
