Explaining Asbestos

There are six different types of naturally occurring minerals that are grouped under the catch-all term “asbestos.” But you don't really need to know all of them to understand what asbestos is and why it's dangerous.

Asbestos materials form long, tiny fibers that are naturally resistant to heat and fire. They are odorless and tasteless, and asbestos is not easily detected visually. Because of these attributes, asbestos was a crucial component in a staggering array of products and materials, including:

  • Vehicle brakes
  • Building insulation
  • Wall and ceiling panels
  • Floor tiles
  • Electrical wires
  • Household appliances such as toasters
  • Furnaces and furnace door gaskets
  • Carpet underlays

And this is far from an exhaustive list. As you can see, it was difficult to avoid exposure to asbestos for a huge chunk of the 20th Century. It continues to have certain uses today. Asbestos was usually combined with a binding agent that prevented it from being released into the air. But when those binding agents fail, the asbestos particles float freely in the air.

These particles pose a serious danger to anyone in the area. When asbestos particles are breathed or otherwise consumed, they work their way into the lungs, where they can remain for decades. The health problems associated with asbestos exposure, whether occupational or otherwise, don't show up immediately. In fact, mesothelioma can take decades to manifest symptoms or show up on tests.

And because asbestos was so ubiquitous for so long, products that contained asbestos did not often contain warning labels. This means you could well have been exposed to asbestos without your knowledge or consent. Problems also arise when family members are exposed to asbestos second-hand, such as by coming into contact with an asbestos worker's uniform.

Our law firm is dedicated to helping the victims of asbestos exposure pursue the justice and compensation they deserve. We have a proven track record of working with our clients and winning the compensation they need to pay their medical bills and other expenses.
