Stage Three Mesothelioma Treatment

The stages of mesothelioma are designed to help doctors determine the rate of progression of the asbestos cancer, and to design the best course of treatment for that level of development. In stage three, the tumor has spread to areas adjacent to the primary location including the lymph nodes. At this stage, treatment options focus on maximizing comfort and minimizing pain.

If you live in the Houston area and are suffering from mesothelioma or any other negative side effect of asbestos exposure, please contact Heard, Robins, Cloud & Black, LLP by calling us at (800) 499-1797 today. Our experienced Houston mesothelioma lawyers can explain your legal rights and work to get a settlement you deserve.

Treatment Options for Stage Three Mesothelioma

By the time a patient has reached stage three, the prognosis is less favorable than earlier stages. At this point, the cancer cells have traveled to other nearby areas of the body, so even if the primary tumor can be removed, mesothelioma will continue to spread.

Each patient will have a unique treatment plan in stage three, just as in earlier stages. Treatments may include surgery, radiation therapy, or palliative care measures.

Depending on the location of the tumor, surgery may still be an option, however the primary goal of surgery at this point would be to reduce pain and discomfort since the mesothelioma has already spread to other areas. The location and extent of the tumor dictates whether surgery is a worthwhile treatment. In some cases, surgery may not be desirable as the potential benefits may be outweighed by the risks and recovery.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy can provide relief to symptoms in stage three mesothelioma. The goal of radiation therapy in stage three is to target areas of the tumors that are painful and affecting quality of life, rather than preventing metastization.

Palliative Care

Palliative care is a multidisciplinary approach to medical treatment for people with serious illnesses like stage three mesothelioma. It focuses on quality of life by helping patients manage pain and other symptoms of mesothelioma itself along with the mental and emotional support needed to cope with the specific issues that each patient faces. Counseling, massage therapy, nutritional counseling and pain management may all play a part in palliative care along with conventional medical procedures.
