Protection from Asbestos

Houston, Texas and Nationwide

Although asbestos stopped being widely used several decades ago, there are still thousands of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in many places and products today, all of which can put you at risk of exposure. However, the people with the greatest risk of developing an asbestos-related disease are those who work directly with the material, including miners and workers who process asbestos-containing products.

If you have further questions about asbestos, or if you have a case to discuss, please call us today at (800) 499-1797 to schedule a free consultation with our experienced Texas asbestos attorneys at Heard Robins Cloud & Black LLP.

How to Protect Yourself from Asbestos Exposure

If you work with asbestos-containing materials, below are some safety tips to help you reduce the amount of dust and inhalation:

  • Use hand tools, not power tools
  • Keep materials damp
  • Clean as you work with a class H vacuum (not a brush)
  • Double-bag and label asbestos waste
  • Use a disposable FFP3 type mask, and make sure it is properly secured
  • Wipe overalls down with a rag when finished, and remove them before removing your mask
  • Place overalls in a disposable asbestos bag; do not take them home

Licensed and Non-Licensed Asbestos Materials

Non-licensed asbestos materials include floor tiles, asbestos fire blankets, asbestos cement, and textured coating. You should only work with these materials if you have had the necessary training, and have been provided with appropriate equipment and protective wear.

Licensed asbestos materials require a special license to work with; these include:

  • Asbestos insulation on pipes, panels, and ceiling tiles
  • Asbestos lagging on pipes
  • Sprayed coatings on walls, ceilings, beams, and columns

Always be aware of the dangers of these materials, and make sure you are fully prepared to protect yourself and your family by properly cleaning and disposing of asbestos after working with it.
